Ranbir kapoor's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani creating waves

This is going to be a ghazab ka phillum simply because the hottest sensations of Bollywood, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, are coming together on screen as a jodi for the first time.

Kahani already have people rating them as a hit. Tips Films, which is presenting this romantic comedy, believes that it has a winner, given its earlier track record — Race and Kismat Konnection. Like Ranbir and Katz, producer Ramesh Taurani too is excited about his offering because it’s directed by Rajkumar Santoshi who has given hits like Andaz Apna Apna, Barsaat, Damini and many others. “Ajab... is even more hilarious than Andaz Apna Apna,” said Taurani, “in fact, if Andaz had comedy, Ajab has comedy and romance in it.”

Telling BT why they chose Ranbir and Katz, Santoshi said, “The film required a fresh pair. We were very impressed with Ranbir and Katrina. They have great screen presence and their fans will love them in this film.”

The stars hit it off instantly on day one. They shot extensively on exotic locations in Turkey, Goa and Ooty, and like in the film, they had fun on the sets too. “Don’t go by her looks, she’s a bully,” said Ranbir as Katrina smiled and added, “People across all sections will be able to relate to this film.” The music, too, is catching on with audiences and topping charts, especially the song Tera Hone Laaga Hoon.

“The song wasn’t choreographed as such. The two were told to be natural and their screen presence added magic to the song,” said the filmmakers. Pritam, who scored the music, roped in some big singers like Atif Aslam, Kailash Kher, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alisha Chinoy and Hard Kaur for this rom-com which is set to hit theatres on Novembe 6.

Volkswagen to launch first TV ad in India news

Volkswagen India is targeting the Indian consumer with its first television ad which will go on air tomorrow.

The German auto major is launching an integrated 360-degree communication campaign conceptualised by DDB Mudra.

The ad shows a young boy in a Volkswagen showroom deciding on the cars that he wants to 'book in advance' at various stages of his life – one for his 18th birthday, one when he becomes the 'vice-president' of a company and another when he eventually becomes the chief executive officer.

The tagline at the end of the commercial says, 'German engineering. Made for India'.

Besides television, the integrated communication campaign will involve print, digital and out-of-home media for the first time in India. The campaign is aimed at heightening Volkswagen's brand equity in the Indian market.

Elaborating on the campaign, Lutz Kothe, chief general manager - marketing and PR, Volkswagen India, said, ''Based on a clear brand strategy, Volkswagen is known for its cutting-edge advertising across the world. Our powerful and creative campaigns continue to have a special place in the consumer's mind through decades. With our first brand campaign in India, we have strived to achieve the same for our consumers here and are confident that they will take to it.''

Actress Dimple Kapadia's sister "simple kapadia" passed away to cancer

Actor-costume designer Simple Kapadia passed away at a local hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Younger sister of actor Dimple Kapadia, Simple had been battling cancer for three years. She was 50.

Family friends said Simple suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken by her elder sister Dimple to the hospital. She passed away in the afternoon.

Simple had been living with her sister for the last three years. Sources close to the family said Dimple even refused to take up work for three years to take care of her ailing sister.

Born on August 15, 1958, Simple started her career as an actor with her (then) brother-in-law, Rajesh Khanna, in the film Anurodh in 1976. The audiences rejected the film but she continued acting in about 20 more films like Lootmaar, Pyaar Ke Do Pal, Jeevan Dhara, Shaaka and Rehguzar. She quit acting in 1986.

After a gap of nearly 10 years, Simple returned to Bollywood as a dress designer for Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia. She even won the National Award for costume design for the film Rudaali.

'The lovemaking scene in Kurbaan was necessary'

One would think directing A-listers like Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor would make first-time director Rensil D'Silva nervous.

But the filmmaker claims he's not as he has got 18 years experience as an ad-man. Plus scripting films like Aks, Rang De Basanti and Mani Ratnam's upcoming film Raavan, must have helped calm the nerves a bit.

Nervous or no, Rensil's directorial debut Kurbaan is generating a lot of buzz for it's terrorism theme and it's real-life romantic pairing of Saif-Kareena.

Here's what the filmmaker has to say of his experience when he got to chat with his fans on Tuesday. For those who missed the chat, here's a recap.

RENSIL answers, I have been working with Mani on three scripts over the last two years. Lajo was one of them. We have another untitled screenplay that Mani should begin next year. And I have helped him on Ravaan.

mani asked, Hi, what can you tell us about Raavan?
RENSIL answers, Ravaan is a contemporary update on the myth set in today's times. But the characters and the plot line don't change very dramatically from the original.

zmxkasldxa asked, Hello there, Why did you zero on Kareena and Saif for Kurbaan?
RENSIL answers, Because Saif and Kareena fitted the roles I had written. Also they are fabulous actors, easy to get along with and they responded very strongly to the script. I think now when I view the final cut of the film there could be no other actors who could have played these protagonists.

Shabnam Al Fatwani asked, Hello Rensil, how was it working with a real life couple on reel life???
RENSIL answers, I don't think there was any difference as such. I responded to them more as actors than as a couple. It did help in the more intimate scenes though because I think Indian actors always have difficulty with intimacy on the big screen. It just made things easy. Apart from that the advantage of working with a couple like them is that they are foodies. So my evening dinners were ensured!

Vidya Balan carries 45 kg boy on shoulder

Who says acting is easy? Not when you have to carry a boy weighing 45 kgs on your shoulders. Just ask actress vidya Balan, who had to go through the exercise for her film "Paa" -- and ended up falling.

"In a scene, Vidya had to shoot with a child who is playing the younger version of Amitabh Bachchan in 'Paa'. The scene required Vidya to carry him on her shoulders," said a source.

"Vidya weighs 45 kgs and so did the boy. Vidya carried him on her shoulders nevertheless. Suddenly there was this loud thud and people saw that she had lost balance and fallen on the ground along with the boy. The actress still completed the shot," added the source.

"Paa", slated for a Dec 4 release, revolves around a father-son relationship. While Abhishek Bachchan plays the father, Amitabh Bachchan will be seen as his son who is suffering from a rare disorder called progeria.

The two new girls in Ranbir Kapoor’s life are Shazahn Padmansee and Gauhar Khan, his co-stars from Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year, which debuts on Dec 11th. How did Shazahn find filming with the new generation superstar? "While shooting for the movie, we all got along like a house on fire,” she says, “The entire crew played pranks on each other. There were times when I too was made a scapegoat."

Still only 22, Shazahn has already kissed Ranbir three times - in Rocket Singh - and has been hugged by SRK whilst making a TV ad with him - she looks destined for the top! The hug from SRK came after starry-eyed Shazahn told King Khan that she had watched DDLJ 25 times. The two also share the same director in Shimit Amin, who has directed both Chak De India and Rocket Singh.

Gauhar Khan is also hoping that Rocket Singh will put her on the map - she is in the movie from beginning to end. However, she intends to use the kudos she gains from the film wisely and is in no mood to rush into any new production. “I’m in no hurry to sign projects or be in the rat race for having a number of films in hand,” she confirms, “The issue here is to be known as an actor and concentrate on challenges rather than break my head over who is signed opposite me.”

Katrina kaif pays 15 lakh to learn Hindi

How much does it cost to hire Katrina Kaif’s services in Bollywood for a day? Exactly Rs 15 lakh! This is the amount reached by the actress herself. And which she apparently carried, in cash, onto Prakash Jha’s sets of Rajniti recently when she thought she might have to compensate the filmmaker for wasting one day’s shooting.

The story goes that Katz, the only female character in Jha’s heavy duty set-up headed by Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Randhir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, is atrocious in her delivery of Hindi dialogue. And in Rajniti , which she is very excited about, the actress is the focal point of the script and has a lot of lines. But Katz has been taking her Hindi dialogue delivery lessons seriously and is hell-bent on getting the accent and pronunciation right.

Now comes the twist. On one particular day during her recent stint in Bhopal, Katz found herself staring at sheets of lengthy dialogues and realized she would need an extra day to prepare if she was to get it right. So, she went up to Jha and told him about her predicament. And even before the filmmaker, who’s had enough grief with this film, could bat an eyelid, the professional girl volunteered to compensate him for her day’s shooting expenses.

Jha confirmed the story. “It was a truly professional gesture and I’m very touched,’’ he said. Of course, he didn’t take the money and gave his actress the one extra day she needed. Only to be rewarded on day two. Unit hands say that Katrina had taken it as a challenge and knew every dialogue pat. She surprised everyone present on the set with her spoken lines. And so, continues to be the flavour of the season.

Tropical Cyclone Strengthens Near India, May Hit Coast Tomorrow

Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- A tropical cyclone strengthened over the Arabian Sea off the west coast of India and is forecast to make landfall north of Mumbai early tomorrow.

Tropical Cyclone 04A was 393 kilometers (244 miles) south- southwest of Mumbai at 11:30 p.m. local time yesterday, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its Web site.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds strengthened to 74 kilometers per hour, from 65 kph yesterday, as it moved north at 13 kph, the center said. The storm’s winds are forecast to strengthen to 83 kph by 11:30 a.m. today.

Priyanka Bhatia is Neil Nitin Mukesh's Girl Friend

Neil Nitin Mukesh’s love interest is no longer kept out of view. That the girl in question Priyanka Bhatia is very much part of the Mukesh parivar became evident on the night of November 2 when at the Fame Adlabs at a private screening of Jail, Priyanka was prominently present alongside Neil’s parents and brother Naman.

Neil mother and girlfriend sobbed uncontrollably throughout.

“Priyanka and my mom were hysterical with grief. They weren’t looking at just a character being put through a traumatic time. To them it was someone who they both love in pain in front of their eyes,” said Neil.

Neil admits Priyanka is an integral part of his family. “My parents and her parents don’t only know and like one another we also visit one another’s homes constantly. More than lovers we’re friends first. There’s a comfort level in our interaction that makes us very relaxed with one another. We don’t have to hide anything. We meet openly and are very proud of one another. There’s no pressure for marriage on either side. When it happens, it happens. The marital status on the passport would hardly alter anything between us.”

Priyanka has done a course in fashion designing. Neil is open to the idea of Priyanka designing his clothes for his films. “I’d love that. But it should happen on its own. Neither Priyanka nor I want to pressurize anyone to use her skills. But if it happens I’d be very happy to be dressed up by her.”

Another happy happening is the fact that Neil’s colleague Ranbir Kapoor’s film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani releases on the same day as Neil’s Jail.

Says Neil, “Ranbir and I are of course competitors. But there’s no negative rivalry between us. Our respective fathers would kill us if we behaved like two brats fighting for the same roles. I’m proud that Ranbir’s and my grandfather were very close friends. My father and Ranbir’s father adore each other. Ranbir is like my younger brother.”

So is Neil saying Ranbir is no competition?

“Of course he is!” rejoins Neil. “I’d want Ranbir’s film to do as well as mine. Fortunately Jail and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani look like the North and South pole.”

On Tuesday night all of Neil’s forthcoming directors saw Jail at Yashraj Studios, “David Dhawan, Abbas-Mustan, Kunal Kohli and Ken Ghosh saw the film. I think they liked what they saw. So I’m safe in their films.”

cyclone in arabian sea - Cyclone alert for south Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: The weather department has issued a cyclone alert in south Gujarat as the deep depression over Arabian Sea moving in the northerly
direction is expected to cross between Mahua and Dahanu early on Thursday morning.

Director of Indian Meterology Department (IMD), Gujarat Kamaljeet Ray said that the deep depression is currently lying 400 km west of Goa. "The system is currently not a cyclone, but is likely to intesify into a cyclonic storm. It is moving in the northerly direction and will in the same direction for some more time. Afterwards, it is expected to move north-north-eastwards and cross south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast between Mahuva and Dahanu either late on Wednesday night or early on Thursday morning," said Ray.

Ray said that the weather department has alerted the state government authorities as well as issued port warning. "All fishermen have been advised to stay off the sea," Ray said.

The warning issued on the IMD website said that the deep depression is currently not cyclonic and is moving at a speed of 55-60 kmph. It is expected to intensify and move at 75 kmph.

The low pressure is resulting in a change in weather in south Gujarat region with Dangs, parts of Valsad and Surat district receiving light showered couples with cold breeze on Monday and Tuesday, which brought down the mercury level by a few degrees to 27 from 35 degrees Celsius recorded on Sunday.

Flood control department sources said light showers were experienced throughout the day in most parts of the district. While Umarpada taluka in the district received 2 mm rainfall, other parts in the district including Surat city experienced light drizzles.

Sources said after Diwali, the temperature during the day time gradually reduces, bringing down the night temperature.

Surtis have heaved a sigh of relief with the fall in the temperature. Most of the fun-loving Surtis escaped to Dumas seashore, some 15 km from the city.

Cyclone terror is hurtling towards Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The meteorological department in the city has warned of a cyclonic storm and rainfall at most places in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, by Wednesday evening. The Met department's forecast comes in the wake of formation of deep depression over the Arabian Sea.At 11:30 am on Tuesday, the deep depression lay over central Arabian Sea 470 km west northwest of Mangalore (420 km southwest of Goa) and 670 km south- southwest of Mumbai.

The Met department has warned that the system is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and move north for some time and then north-northeastwards. "It will cross south Gujarat and the north Maharashtra coast between Mahuva and Dahanu in the early hours of November 12," it said.

The Met department has said that under the influence of the cyclonic storm, there would be rainfall at most places in Gujarat, including Valsad, Surat, Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari, Bhavnagar, Baroda, Anand, Ahmedabad, Daman, and Dadra Nagar Haveli. The Met also warned that sea conditions will remain 'rough to very rough' and has advised fishermen not to venture out to sea.

Velji Masani, president of Akhil Gujarat Macchimar Mahamandal, told DNA that the fisheries department has warned them not to venture out to sea. "We have been stopping fishermen from going to sea," said Masani.

The Met department also forecast that winds at 35 to 45 km per hour, with their speeds rising to 55 km an hour, will blow in from the easterly direction, and along south Gujarat coast.

Jessica Lal case: Manu Sharma back in jail, Delhi Government seeks CCTV footage

New Delhi, Nov 10 (ANI): Manu Sharma, the man serving a life sentence for the murder of model Jessica Lal, returned to the Tihar Jail here on Tuesday, almost two months after being out on parole. Sharma re-entered the jail after generating public ire and controversy for violating his parole terms.

His return to jail came hours after actor Arjun Rampal confirmed that Sharma was partying at Rampal’s nightclub. The Delhi government has reportedly asked for CCTV footage of the actor’s restaurant - the Lap Bar - and deputed some policemen to verify if Sharma, who was out on parole, was indeed present at the bar. Sharma had stated his mother’s illness and late grandfather’s last rites as reasons for asking for parole.

Sharma’s antics have caused a furor, especially after Sharma’s supposedly ill mother was seen attending a function in Chandigarh.

The last two times Jessica Lall’s killer was caught on camera were on February 2, 2007 when he had moved the Supreme Court challenging his conviction by the High Court, and earlier on December 20, 2006 when he had walked into court to hear his fate.

Sharma had cited: ‘Family affairs’ as a reason to avail the first 30 days of parole from September 22 this year. He said he wanted to perform ‘Pind dan’ or ancestral rites of his deceased grandmother, “maintaining social ties with friends and relatives, to attend an aging mother and to maintain his supervision of neglected business.”

Sharma was granted a further thirty-day extension to attend to his business, where he is the MD and currently a major shareholder.

Sharma had clearly used loopholes in the judicial system to his advantage.

Sabrina Lal, Jessica Lal’s sister has questioned Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s reasoning for giving parole to Sharma. (ANI)

In real life her marital status may still be single, but a fake certificate prepared here suggests that Bollywood diva Katrina Kaif is the better half of local BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola.

A marriage certificate approved by Indore Municipal Corporation claims that the 24-year-old actress married the local MLA on December 2, 2008 and got the same registered with the civic body on December 11 the same year.

"The marriage certificate is totally fake and was not issued by the municipal body. It must be an act of some mischievous persons," IMC marriage registrar Dr Natwar Sarda told reporters.

"It appears that somebody first scanned the IMC marriage certificate and then with the help of some software showed the bollywood actress and MLA as husband and wife," Sarda said.

The IMC has taken the issue seriously and will soon lodge a complaint with the police so that the persons who have done it can be booked for the crime.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has made it easier for companies to make money from mobile applications by allowing them to drop prepackaged advertising and micropayment applications into their software.

The two new application programming interfaces (APIs) were among a number of tools RIM announced in San Francisco at its second developers' conference.

Overall, the tools were aimed at making it easier to write applications for the BlackBerry and to integrate them so that users' experience "flowed", said Jim Balsillie, co-CEO at RIM.

Two other key announcements were the launch of geo-location APIs based on cellular radio towers, to provide in-building triangulation of users' whereabouts, and "push" APIs that allowed tighter integration with alarm, alert and notification applications.

Oracle chief architect Ted Farrell said many firms were trying to push data to where it was needed, and increasingly this meant to mobile platforms. Oracle had developed Fusion, a way of collecting data and formatting it for different mobile platforms.

Oracle worked with RIM on two applications, one a mobile browser and another a mobile client. Using Oracle Application Development Framework, developers could target their apps to pre-defined BlackBerry handsets with a minimum of coding.

Jeff McDowell, RIM's senior vice-president for business marketing and software alliances, said the Oracle Fusion and Adobe announcements were important to RIM and its customers as they were standard tools that anyone could use to write programmes for BlackBerries.

He said that smartphones were becoming application delivery systems. "Voice is just another app," he said.

McDowell said there were fewer and fewer "island" apps. Applications increasingly had to link to others to provide the rich functionality demanded by users, but without losing the cost-effectiveness and robust security demanded by CFOs and CIOs respectively.

Even though Santoshi wants to do something different, the market pressure may finally get to him and he will have to take Ranbir Kapoor’s dates for next year. While he denied the news at first stating that he never succumbs to market pressures, Santoshi added that he is being advised to do the sequel to Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

On Monday morning, Himesh Reshammiya and others associated with Radio were in for a surprise. They woke up with a news break which declared that the running length of Radio was 3 hours. In today's times, when shorter movies are ruling the roost and anything above 2.5 hours is considered to be nothing less than sacrilege, it was but natural that a news item like this was a cause for worry. More so because it had no truth to it.

Fumes Himesh, "This is figment of someone's imagination. Radio spans 1 hour 55 minutes, not 3 hours as a section of media is indicating. It is a plain lie and malicious. I have no clue where this came from."

With the declaration coming from the horse's mouth, we hope the rumourmongers would now have to think of something better.

Directed by Ishaan Trivedi, Radio stars Sonal Sehgal and Shenaz Treasuryvala as the leading ladies. The film releases all over on 3rd December.

Google launching free videoconferencing

NEW DELHI: Google is all set to strengthen its voice and video chat capabilities. The voice and video chat feature in the company's the email service, Gmail, is currently limited to one-to-one communication, however, Google wants to broaden this capability to more than two participants.

The Google Apps product manager Rishi Chandra told SFGate that Google is set to roll out its first update in a long line of updates that will include multi-user video conferencing.

Chandra told the web site, “This (current Gmail capability) is the first step in a much broader set of features we hope to roll out over the next six to 12 months around video (and voice) chat capabilities.” He added, "It’s a great opportunity for us to push that space along."

Google acquired Web and video conferencing software in 2007 from Swedish company Marratech.

Comedian Katt Williams Arrested for Burglary and Trespassing

Comedian Katt Williams was arrested Sunday night in Atlanta on charges of burglary and criminal trespassing. According to police authorities, Williams allegedly broke into a house and attempted to steal jewelry and other items.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office reports Micah S. Katt Williams was arrested following a call from an unidentified homeowner Sunday night reporting an intruder had “gained entry by breaking into the home, and items were taken from the residence.”Katt Williams was identified as the suspect in the burglary and booked into the Coweta County Jail. Williams has been charged with burglary and criminal trespassing and is expect to be arraigned on Monday afternoon.

This is hardly the first time Williams has tangled with the law. The comedian and rapper was sentenced to three years’ probation in 2006 after being caught carrying a concealed firearm in his briefcase at the Los Angeles International Airport. A year ago, Williams was arrested again after police found a gun in his car during a traffic stop in New York City. Those charges were later dismissed.

Pazhassi Raja (Tamil) postponed to November 13

The dubbed Tamil version of Malayalam super star Mammootty's super hit historical film Pazhassi Raja, which was earlier expected to grace screens across Tamil Nadu on November 6, has been rescheduled for November 13.

It is heard that the Tamil version has been trimmed by 30 minutes. The makers have reportedly cut down from the original 3.15 hours to 2.45 hours.

The film, written by Jnanpith winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan, is rocking the Kerala box office and is on its way to become one of the biggest grossers ever in the language. Pazhassi Raja collected more revenue in its first three weeks than the all time super hit Twenty:20 released in 2008.

Paa: The mother of film promotions

From teaser ads to the Big B visiting schools – the producers are pulling out all stops on marketing.

The teaser ads last Thursday showed just a bald head inside a cardboard box with a caption saying ‘See you in December’. But that was enough to make Paa a part of everyday conversation.

Such teaser ads, normally associated with an FMCG product, are being used for the promotion of a film for the first time, that too more than a month before the actual release date. Paa, in which Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a 13-year-old boy with an extremely rare genetic defect that causes accelerated ageing, has many other firsts to its credit.

For one, the Big B is planning to visit schools to educate children about the disease called progeria which makes a person look five times older than his actual age. Says ad veteran R Balki who has directed the film and is the brain behind the campaign: “The story is sensitive, so we have to avoid the usual razzmatazz associated with a Bollywood movie”.

But Balki, who had directed Bachchan in another movie called Chinee Kum, is thrilled with the response that the teaser ads have generated. “The noise level has beaten our expectations,” he says.

It’s also the first time that Aishwarya Rai (Bachhan’s daughter-in-law) will take on the role of overseeing the promotion of the film, which has been co-produced by ABCL Ltd (making it a home venture) and Reliance Entertainment.

In yet another novel experiment, instead of the usual credit titles, Jaya Bachchan will be introducing the cast and crew of the film. Though used in Hollywood, this is the first time that a Bollywood movie will do this.

The content of the film, a emotional story of a father and son, itself is unique – apart from Bachchan playing a 13-year old boy, his son, Abhisek, will the play the role of his father — a big enough reason promoted subtly to generate curiosity.

And all this has been achieved without much cost, says Balki. “Everything has been taken care of by the novelty element which has got people talking. More than making an expensive campaign, our idea was to design it in such a way that more than Bachchan, it’s his character that people talk about,” Balki says.

In any case, the most expensive element in the Rs 16 crore film (the low budget is understandable as it’s a home venture of the two main stars) was Bachchan’s make-up which cost 10 per cent of the total budget. No wonder it used to take four hours to put on the make-up and two hours to remove it.

Analysts say the clever campaigning has done exactly what Balki wanted – Brand Paa has become bigger than the superstar.

Hiren Pandit, Managing Partner of Group M, thinks it’s a brilliantly executed campaign. “The production houses know that the high point of Paa is Bachchan's character and look in the film. So the campaign is a build-up to that selling point. This has been backed by great PR initiatives which are creating a huge curiosity,” Pandit says.

The other important contributor to the fim’s promotion is its highly interactive website – paathefilm.com. The question – Do you like Amitabh’s Paa look? — has got record response over the last four days.

It’s also for the first time that the Big B is promoting any of his films on his blog.

Film promotion, clearly, has never reached such heights before.

Kamal Hassan turns 55, completes 50 years in cinema

There's no denying that Tamil superstar Kamal Hassan is one the greatest actors of his generation, the legend celebrated his 55th birthday today, along with the 50th anniversary of his debut in cinema.

Hassan won his first National Award as a child artist for his screen debut in ''Kalathur Kannamma'' in 1959. Taking a cue from the Hollywood heavyweight Dustin Hoffman, Hassan is famous for being one of the leading method actors of Indian cinema. Apart from being a noted actor and director, Hassan is a screenwriter, lyricist, playback singer and choreographer.

Kamal Hassan made his film debut in 1959 in the film Kalathur Kannamma when he was just a 6-year-old child artiste. Later he was cast as an adult for the first time in the 1975 film Apoorva Raagangal in which he played a controversial role of a rebellious youth in love with an older woman. In 1982 he claimed his first Indian National Film Award for the film 'Moondram Pirai' in which he played a teacher who tends a child-like amnesiac. He had already won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist in his debut film.

In 1976, Haasan appeared in the drama Moondru Mudichu with Rajinikanth and Sridevi, followed by Manmadha Leelai, and Oru Oodhappu Kan Simittugiradhu. In 16 Vayathinile he appeared as an mentally ill villager, once again alongside Rajinikanth and Sridevi and in Sigappu Rojakal he appeared as a psychopathic sexual killer. All of these four consecutive films earned him Filmfare Best Tamil Actor Awards. Haasan's 100th career film appearance was in 1981's Raja Paarvai, which also marked his debut in film production. 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye', became his first Hindi-language film and he followed it up with 'Sagar' and 'Geraftar'.

Haasan appeared in Mani Rathnam's 1987 film Nayagan in which he portrayed the life of an underworld don in Bombay. The film was featured in Time magazine's list of '100 greatest movies of all time' and it earned Hassan another National Award. He followed it up with the mindblowing silent black comedy 'Pushpak'. He then played a triple role in Apoorva Sagodharargal, dual roles in Indrudu Chandrudu, and four roles in Michael Madhana Kamarajan. He then won his third National Film Award for Best Actor in Indian where he again played a double role. Later films include Anbe Sivam, Hey Ram, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, and Dasavathaaram where he played ten different roles. The latter has become the second highest grossing film ever in Tamil cinema.

Nokia recalls chargers for 7210 model in India

After detecting a manufacturing defect in a charger meant for Nokia 7210 handset, world's largest cell phone maker Nokia today announced an exchange programme for the charger in the Indian market.

Consumers who own the chargers manufactured by a third-party supplier are recommended to exchange these chargers for free, the company said in a statement.

Asked whether the company detected a major fault in these chargers, Nokia said, "During a routine quality control process, we identified a potential product quality issue with certain chargers manufactured by one of its third-party suppliers.

"The plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger's internal components and potentially posing an electric shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket," the company said.

Nokia, however, asserted that no complaint has been registered so far globally or in India and it was detected only through its internal quality control test programme.

When contacted, Ambrish Bakaya, director, corporate affairs of Nokia India told PTI, "As a responsible corporate citizen, and the most trusted brand in India, we have pro-actively initiated this exchange program to safeguard consumer interest."

In August 2007, Nokia had offered replacement of some of its 'BL-5C' batteries after scores of complaints about overheating.

The company said only one model of charger - 'AC-3E' - manufactured by a third-party supplier between June 15 and August 9, 2009 falls within the scope of the latest global exchange programme.

Hence, the replacement will cover only chargers bought along with Nokia-7210 handsets after June 15, 2009.

Asked about the supplier of these chargers, officials declined to comment. Sources, however, said that the supplier was a Chinese company.

"Nokia is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers," company officials said.

Atif Aslam has Bollywood offers

Pakistani singer Atif Aslam, who crooned his way into the hearts of Indians with Bollywood songs, has revealed he has acting offers from the industry and is open to them. "Artists don't belong to any nation," he says.

"I would like to act in a Bollywood film. It's not my forte, but I want to give it a try," Aslam told IANS on telephone from Lahore. He is appreciated not just for his singing abilities but also for his suave looks and style statement.

"I have various offers from Bollywood but nothing has been finalised. I am reading scripts at the moment. Once something is finalised, I will make an official announcement," he added.

Aslam gained popularity in Pakistan with his band "Jal". He made his presence felt in India with the song "Aadat" in the film "Kalyug". He became a name to reckon with, delivering hit songs like "Woh lamhe" from the film "Woh Lamhe", "Pehli nazar mein" from "Race" and "Bakhuda" from "Kismat Konnection".

"Music is an art form that has no boundaries. Artists don't belong to a nation; they should be free to work wherever they want to," he said.

However, the singer has kept his Indian assignments limited. When asked for the reason, the 26-year-old said he believes in quality rather than quantity.

"I have always focussed on quality work and not quantity. I am not singing just for money and fame. I am singing for myself because I like it. Thus, selecting a few but nice songs was a conscious effort. The lyrics of a song are very important to me," he said.

Atif Aslam also revealed he had never planned to sing in Indian films, but it just happened.

"Bollywood just happened to me. I had not planned it this way. I was quite successful in Pakistan; so I started getting offers from the Hindi film industry too. I like singing in Indian films because you get a lot of exposure here. You get to learn many things," he said.

The singer has sung two songs - "Tera hone laga hoon" and "Tu Jaana na" - in the romantic comedy "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani".

Talking about the success of "Tera hone laga hoon", which has been picturised on Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, Aslam said: "While singing the song, I never thought that the song would become such a big hit. It's all because of the blessing of god that most songs I sing become hits."

"I didn't make any changes to my singing or any other efforts to sing this song. Just that I thought about my first love while crooning this number. It gave me the same kick," he added.

'Tum Mile' - a romance set in the Mumbai deluge (IANS Film Preview)

The Bhatt camp is known for highlighting serious issues or real life events in the garb of a romantic story. And it continues the trend in its next outing 'Tum Mile', which is set against the backdrop of the floods in Mumbai in 2005.

Co-produced by Sony Music and Vishesh Films, the film about a couple stuck in the deluge of July 26, 2005, releases Friday. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan in the lead, 'Tum Mile' is the second directorial venture of Kunal Deshmukh after 'Jannat'.

'There is that shock element in 'Tum Mile', just like every film of the Bhatts. They always bring in something that touches audiences in a big way,' Emraan had told IANS.

'In this film, the shock value comes by the means of floods. It is the anti-hero in the film and would take people back to the time when this unfortunate event actually took place,' the actor said.

As Mumbai gets waterlogged, the disaster also reunites the two ex-lovers. The two meet after a hiatus of six years and have to stick together during the crisis.

The story shifts between the past and the present and as the long night passes, the two learn more about each other than they knew in the years when they were together.

Recreating the deluge wasn't easy for the director.

'There were plenty of problems and I had to give my best in a certain budget. We needed a studio floor bigger than usual with a waterproof ground. I was looking at something cheaper and I got it in Bhandup (close to Thane) with a concrete floor,' said Deshmukh.

'Then standing 12 hours in water every single day had its effects. We had to take a lot of precautions like Hepatitis B (shots). Still I suffered a very bad skin reaction and Emraan got a bad eye. Luckily there were no long-term health issues,' he added.

The actors too had their share of woes.

''Tum Mile' has been a very tiring experience, both physically and mentally. It was a difficult film to be made and hats off to Kunal (Deshmukh) for making it happen,' said Emraan.

'The entire team has done its best to recreate the flood situation. During shooting, everyone from cast and crew used to stand in waist-deep water for hours at a stretch to give that perfect shot. Credit must also go to the special effects guys who have done a brilliant job for the entire recreation,' he added.

'Tum Mile' also keeps up with the Bhatt camp's other trend - good music. The tracks of the film have been ruling the charts with their soulful renditions.

‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ took the nation by storm by fetching one of the biggest starts at the box-office. The start was at par with ‘Love Aaj Kal’ at several screens, although ‘LAK’ had more shows than APKGK, since ‘London Dreams’ has retained some screens, while JAIL, the other new release, has also opened quite wide.

The trends were evident on Thursday night itself, when the paid previews of ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ were held. The response was fantastic. Genelia will be playing Dhanush's ladylove in the Tamil remake of Telugu blockbuster titled 'Ready'.

The original directed by Sreenu Vaitla featured Ram and Genelia in the lead roles. To be produced by Mohan Apparao and Chandra Ramesh, the Tamil version will go on floors soon.

According to the producers, "there was a huge demand for the remake rights of the movie. Thank Almighty, we won the bid. The movie is a mix of action, romance and sentiments."

Hyderabad: With less than a week left for the release of his forthcoming film Tum Mile, actor Emraan Hashmi today described his role in the film as one of the best in his filmy career.

"For me it's one of the best roles of my career. It's something that comes only once or probably couple of times in an actor's career... when they have such a different kind of role. And acting in Tum Mile was an incentive for me," Hashmi told reporters here.

Hashmi, who is paired opposite to actress Soha Ali Khan in the film, was in city along with it's director Kunal Deshmukh and Mahesh Bhatt to promote the film, which is a love story in the backdrop of Mumbai floods happened on July 26, 2005.

"It's (serial kisser tag) something that I have been wanting to change for a long time. I think I'm inching towards it. I definitely want the audience to look beyond that image," Hashmi often dubbed as Bollywood's 'Serial Kisser', said.

And films like Tum Mile will definitely change that for me. The role in the film is something new for me that I will bring to you (audience) than other characters I have played in all my other films," Hashmi added.

The director Balki one day came to us with the script, which I have not read so far, and told us, ‘I want you to play father and son.’ And I was like, ‘What’s new in this?’ Then he added, ‘I want you to play the father and Amitji to play your son.’ It was an opportunity of a lifetime. All I had to do was be his best friend, which we are in real life. And I enjoyed playing Paa’s Paa.

What was your first reaction when you saw Amitabh Bachchan on the sets with his make-up on?

I didn’t recognise him! My dad and Vidya Balan were shooting near our home and Balki asked me to drop by. I was mingling with the people there and then I asked Balki, ‘Where’s dad?’ And dad called out, ‘Next to you.’ I was stunned at the way he looked and behaved. He had transformed into a 13-year-old.

You sport just one costume in the film.

I was happy since I did not have to change. Coming from a film like Dostana, where all I had to do was change costumes, this was cakewalk. But then Balki took his revenge in a song where he made me wear 17 different costumes.

You play a politician in the film. Did you derive inspiration from someone?

Yes, from two of my good friends, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot, but only the physicality.

What was the wackiest thing that Amitabh Bachchan did as a kid in the movie?

He got on to my back!

Since Amitabh plays the kid, did you have the liberty to bully him?

I would bully him around whenever we were doing a shot together, but once the director said cut, dad was back to his usual self. And then I had to bear the brunt of bullying him.

Weren’t you afraid of being overshadowed by your father?

Every actor is overshadowed by Mr Bachchan in a film. But then you cannot afford to think that way and be in awe of him. I would not have done so many films with him had I thought that way.

Does Amitabh bring his roles home?

No. Dad never brought any of his roles home. We would have liked it if he had brought a character like Shahenshah home or hung a rope around his shoulder like in Deewar. But in his illustrious career, not once has he brought work home.

As a producer, did you have it easy?

Being a producer is not a happy spot to be in. But then it is not that tough either, because all I do is say ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘I’ll think it over.’

What are your expectations from the film?

I made this film for my dad and, after watching this film, I just want dad to tell me that he is proud of me.

In yesterday's episode of Pati, Patni Aur Woh, TV actor Gaurav Chopra's ex-girlfriend Narayani Shastri walked in with choreographer Saroj Khan as a special judge for a dance competition.

On seeing her, Gaurav's current flame TV actress Mouni Roy (and the guy himself) seemed jittery and shaken. When we contacted Narayani, she said, "I don't know why people make such a big issue out of it. Gaurav and I have known each other for donkey's years. We are extremely close friends and I still maintain that. Mouni is like my younger sister. I will never do anything to hurt them."

Then why were they taken by surprise on the show? "The channel asked me to come on the show and I accepted. And if Gaurav and Mouni looked shocked, they know the reason better. It could also be a brilliant editing job, maybe an attempt from the channel to garner TRPs."

But Mouni hasnt been very kind to Narayani when confronted by media. Narayani irritably adds, "The media must be asking Mouni questions which upset her. In a fit of anger or stress, she may have said things that I'm sure she didn't mean."

Well, whatever the case Narayani, even you seem hassled... Hope it's not because of your guy (oops, best friend!) dating your 'younger sister'!

Who next after Hrithik Roshan? It's a question that's been dodging the fans and industry watchers for quite some time. Well, looks like the wait is finally over. Showing consistent improvement from Saawariya to Wake Up Sid, it's now pretty clear that Ranbir Kapoor will be the new teen sensation. In his latest offering Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, the actor effortlessly outshines everybody else in the frame. He is quite simply the most charismatic actor of his generation. When an actor makes you overlook the gaping flaws of a bad script and actually makes the loopholes work – you know he is a star.

And then there is Katrina Kaif. There is something about her infectious smile and attractive presence that lights up even the dullest of movies. Just watching her go through those several wardrobe changes and listening to her now-charming accented Hindi make you forget all about the torturous November heat.

Take the cool pair away and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is a clichéd romance straight out of the 90s. The hero is a broke, good-for-nothing but kindhearted small town boy (Ranbir Kapoor). It's love at first sight for him when he encounters the gorgeous girl-next-door (Katrina Kaif). A few misunderstandings later the two become friends. But of course like most Hindi film heroines, the girl loves an NRI stud (Upen Patel, for God's sake) who makes his entry at the interval point. NRI's dad would obviously not approve of the girl from the valley. So our madly in love hero goes all out to unite the couple against all opposition. This leaves the already confused heroine in a greater dilemma about who she truly cares for. You can figure out the rest. Half-an-hour into the film, it takes no Einstein to unravel the plot.

The usually innovative Raj Kumar Santoshi opts for a surprisingly conventional formula. His execution too is uninspired borrowing heavily from past entertainers. The characters are your stereotypical nagging father, rude step mom, supportive friends, etc. The setting is not Manhattan but the vintage Ooty and Goa. Santoshi even stuffs every frame with unnecessary extras. The first 45-minutes is a sometimes crude, Indra Kumar like slapstick affair that is far from amusing. From here on he moves into Anees Bazmee territory creating a comedy of errors around several characters. The climax is a Priyadarshan-like crowded one, set in what resembles a soap factory. Santoshi sprinkles some of his Andaz Apna Apna humour, especially with the father-son comedy track and the bit about a stupid kidnapper and his bumbling henchmen. Santoshi's touch is evident only in the brilliantly executed action-packed chases through the second half. To his credit the film maintains a breezy, light-hearted feel throughout.

Pritam's soundtrack is a huge asset complemented by some lavish choreography. But as mentioned it is eventually Ranbir and Katrina who stand tall in the film. Ranbir plays the genuinely difficult part of a Hindi film hero who has to sing, dance, laugh, cry, fight – basically play to gallery. And he does that with a natural flair. Katrina and Ranbir add a certain energy to the proceedings. Their spontaneous and innocent love story is bound to strike a chord with the young crowd.

Wish the storyline was as appealing. The director didn't take any chance in opting for something new and settled for the tried and tested formulaic adaptation of several films we have already watched before.

If the film does well at the box-office, it will be only because of the Kapoor-Kaif jodi.

Verdict: With such a gorgeous pair, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, could have been a charming joyride. But instead it settles for a routine, time pass watch. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif's chemistry shines long after the curtains fall down.

New Delhi Preity Zinta is leaving Bollywood for B-school. “Yes, I’m going to the Harvard Business School to study a short executive course in negotiating and deal-making,” she says. “I thought that since I spend so much time in the US, I might as well use the experience better. I applied to Harvard and got accepted, so I’m quite kicked about going there next month.”

So does this keen interest in business mean we won’t be seeing her much on the big screen? “Not at all,” she says, “I want to make sure that I can balance acting and business. In fact, I’m currently buried under a pile of scripts and am reading each one to make sure that I don’t miss out on anything good. I want to do a role that I’ve never done before.”

She’s also busy with the television show Behind the Seams which she is hosting and producing. But Zinta admits that she hasn’t watched television for the past two months. “TV soaps have these close-ups of people in dark black kohl and it really scares me,” she says. “Reality shows are also staged, so there’s nothing real in them. So what’s there to watch?” Behind the Seams too is a kind of reality show as it takes you through the journey of the Kings XI Punjab team. “It’s a reality show but there’s no acting involved. It’s about cricketers and you really can’t expect cricketers to start acting,” she laughs.

Preity Zinta has not hung up her designer boots and called it quits, on the contrary she’s put on sports shoes now.

The actress who was away from Bollywood for “just six weeks and has not migrated to LA”, came up with the idea of making money for her charity by forming an all-international girls’ basketball squad called the Dream Girls team.

“The players will be internationally-famous women like film stars, supermodels, socialites and, of course, there’ll be me - the captain - and we’ll be playing with professional basketball teams around the world. American experts from NBA will train us,” said Preity, who stands 5 feet 5 inches tall in her socks but has quite a sporting background. “Nobody knows I’ve been a gymnast for 11 years, I did karate for nine years, I am very good at basketball and I rifle shoot too,” she said, adding, “People said that it was a crazy idea to give one-and-a half years to IPL, but then today, financially, I don’t have to care for the rest of my life.”

Does that mean she won’t do films for money anymore? “Are you kidding? I’m not retiring to the jungles! Of course, money is important. I do charity and all but I still need to wear my brands, travel first class and pamper myself. I believe more in living rich than dying rich. My biggest fear is to die broke, ex-film star,” laughed the bubbly actress who devotes a lot of time to causes like child trafficking and the upliftment of women. /

“I want to do full-on commercial films now,” she said. And for that, she conducted a poll on the net where she asked fans who they would like to see her with. “There’s a tie between Saif Ali Khan and Shah Rukh! I’m going to go in search of them now,” laughed Preity.

New Delhi, Nov 6 (PTI) Twitter may have gained immense popularity as a microblogging website but in India majority use it as a source for news.

A survey by technology site www.pluGGd.in says about 16 per cent of Indian users regularly 'tweet' to get news updates.

Acer, the second largest computer manufacturer in the world behind HP, today announced the launch of three new handsets in Indian market, based on Microsoft’s new Window Mobile 6.5 platform.
The latest launch includes Acer Touch e101, Acer beTouch e200 and Acer NeoTouch.

The first handset, which is Acer beTouch e101 comes equipped with a 3.2-inch QVGA touch display (320×240), and includes 2-megapixel camera. The smartphone is powered by 528 MHz processor and supports talk time of 5 hours and standby time of 400 hours. The handset is available at a price of Rs 11,900, across the country.

While, the second handset beTouch e200 is a slider touchscreen phone, which is equipped with a 3.0 inch WQVGA touch screen and 3.2 pixel camera and supports video recording in dimension of 240*320.
The company claims that, with the help of beTouch E200 “Connected contacts” application, the user can stay in touch with his/her family and friends at all the time. The smart phone comes pre-loaded with Window live Messenger, Facebook, Youtube, Flickr, Blogger etc.

Acer beTouch e200 is a 3G ready handset and supports talk time of 5 hours and standby time of 400 hours. The smartphone is available at a price of Rs 17,900.

The company’s third launch is Acer neoTouch, which is a quad-band GSM smartphone with HSDPA support. The Windows phone features 3.8 WVGA touch screen, 5MP camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, among other facilities.

The smartphone is powered by 1 GHz processor and supports talk time of 300 minutes and standby time of 17 days. The handset is priced at Rs 35,000.

22 passengers killed as bus falls into gorge in Himachal pradesh

DHARAMSALA: At least 22 passengers were killed and 48 injured when an overcrowded bus rolled down into a gorge near Haripur area of Kangra district, about 45 km from Dharamsala.

The mishap occurred when the bus driver lost control over the vehicle, which was on its way to Dehra from Nagrota Suriyan, and fell into the 100-feet deep gorge, Superintendent of Police Atul Fulzele said.

The injured were rushed to Dr Rajendra Prasad government medical college in Tanda, they said, adding rescue operation is on and the casualty figure is expected to rise.

Senior civil and police officers have rushed to the accident site.

village lo vinayakudu review | Village lo Vinayakudu is refreshing

If Vinayakudu was the love story between a fat guy and a hot babe, its sequel Village lo Vinayakudu (VLV) retains the basic underlying thread of the fat guy but here he has to tackle the father of the girl he loves.

In a sense, the Telugu sequel is more a family-oriented film. However, the two films are not really connected (like the Munnabhai series) in terms of the storyline, barring of course the lead protagonist (Karthik) and the actor who portrays it (Krishnudu).

Director Saikiran comes up with a clean film sans the usual masala which makes for a good watch.

The film establishes from the beginning that Karthik (Krishnudu) and Kavya (Saranya Mohan) are in love; from the time she was doing her MBBS. Karthik teaches at a kindergarten school. The problems start when Kavya returns to the village and is unable to tell her father Col Lakshmipathi (Rao Ramesh) about their love. Lakshmipathi, after retiring from the army, settles with his brothers and their families in the village. Since he is from the army, he is a strict disciplinarian and most members in the house abide by what he says.

When Karthik comes to the village and tells him about his love for his daughter, he can't digest the fact that his daughter wants to marry a fat man. He starts plotting with his friend to send Karthik away. In fact Lakshmipathi brings in another suitable bachelor Captain Bharath (Dr Bharath Reddy) as a competitor. The story is all about the innocent Karthik (who has a golden heart) and his attempts to marry Kavya.

On the face of it, the simple storyline does hold attention. Beneath of course (without screaming) the film is laced with a message. After seeing the film, the obese will not despair for sure!

VLV has all the elements of a good film. First of all, it has a decent story (Mahi) which is built up well without any vulgarity (Saikiran, Rams) making it worthy of viewing for the whole family. It does not have an item number which has become more or less mandatory. It has songs which are shot within the locales of Andhra Pradesh, mostly. It does have the humour without a separate comedy track.

The film's story is definitely predictable and one knows for sure what's in store. The pace of the first half of the film is a tad better than the second half. The point of clash and the climax could have been handled in a more forceful manner. The chemistry between the lead pair seemed to be missing to a large extent.

By setting the movie in the village and calling it Village lo Vinayakudu does not mean that it has to do with a village. The village constitutes the backdrop but the story is what anyone can relate to from the urban areas too. The idyllic environs of Dindi (near Rajolu in East Godavari district – actually the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation's place) where most of the movie is shot, comes alive in almost a picture post-card fashion. And credit for this should go to Ramana Salwa. Actually it's not just the sylvan surroundings of the Godavari region but also bits of Hyderabad are also shot well. The windmill (though it looked a bit out of place) on the banks of the Godavari added a bit of mystique to it.

The music by Manikanth Kadri is melodious to listen and gels well with the film. Neela Meghama, particularly is sonorous. Muddugaare Yashoda too is hummable. The instrumental piece in the beginning with the titles was pretty apt.

Krishnudu lives the role of Karthik. He has the innocence to carry it off. Saranya Mohan is quite a delight to watch in her debut film. She is bubbly as the character demands. Rao Ramesh is natural in his portrayal of the father. Well-known writer Yendamoori Veerendanath with his penchant for asking puzzles in the film gives a good performance too. Dr Bharat Reddy makes his mark in the cameo.

It's good that producer Mahi and director Saikiran managed to get a few corporate tie-ups which helped the film. Some of the names were increasingly mentioned by the cast did seem quite out of place and a 'deterrent'.

All in all Village lo Vinayakudu may be a bit slow but it's perfect viewing for the family -- clean and wholesome. It's away from the usual masala and therefore is good to watch.

CHENNAI: The Northeast monsoon gained momentum on Wednesday with heavy rains lashing the city and throwing life out of gear. The downpour resulted in waterlogging at many parts of the city, disrupting road traffic and causing chaos on arterial roads during peak hours. Three flights too were delayed by an hour because of the blinding rain. However, rail services remained unaffected.

Road traffic went out of gear at various places like Gemini flyover, Anna Salai, Chennai Central, Egmore and Whites Road. The police had a tough time managing the flow of vehicles. Office goers and students had to wade through ankle-deep water to reach their bus stops. Vehicles had to wait at least for 30 minutes at different junctions and traffic signals because of the pile up.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Nugambakkam received 61.6 mm rain, while Meenambakkam recorded 40.3 mm. Many places over coastal Tamil Nadu and a few places over interior Tamil Nadu too received rains. Rameswaram recorded as much as 80 mm.

According to the Met office, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and at a few places over interior Tamil Nadu till Friday. Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Hyderabad, India (AHN) - Australia overcame a scintillating outing by batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who hit 175 off 141 balls, to post a win by three runs with two balls remaining in the thrilling fifth one-day international Thursday.

Tendulkar, who became the first batsman ever to breach the 17,000-runs mark in one-day cricket, pounded 19 fours and four sixes for his 45th one-day century, but his effort was not enough to lift the Indian side.

The Indian squad was eventually bowled out of 347 in 49.4 overs as it chased Australian's whooping 350-4 in 50 overs.

The decisive point of the match came when Tendulkar was dismissed in the 48th over as Australia took a 3-2 lead in the seven-match series.

Debutant fast bowler Clint McKay picked up three wickets for 59, while Shane Watson had three for 47.

Shaun Marsh accounted for 112 out of Australia's total of 350. Watson scored 93 in an opening stand of 145.

When you find yourself laughing despite yourself at the madcap slapstick being presented, you appreciate the flair of the actors and director.
In the hands of lesser talent, you might have scoffed at the unsophisticated juvenility of it all. Here, you laugh along, celebrating each silly gag.

So you have Prem (Ranbir Kapoor) as the President of a local Happy Club (he wears a shiny badge); the perfect excuse for doing nothing the whole day.

The group, based in a small hill-station, is full of jobless, aimless friends who kidnap girls from their restricting families to unite them with their lovers. Mad things happen.

At one point, three different women are mistaken to be their target as all are wearing the same colour. Such a silly joke...but you'll catch yourself guffawing.

Prem meets Jenny (Katrina) and a love triangle develops, the finale to which is not different from most Hindi films. You can't help spotting the cliches– the hero's loyal buddies, an overbearing father, the protective mother, the heroine who must be rescued again and again and again, the predictable romance, the slimy politician and more such. And yet you're willing to overlook.

Mainly for Ranbir Kapoor who has honestly proven himself to be a talent tornado! Slapstick, emotion, dance, clever lines, romance – the actor tops the class in all!

So in one scene he's all mesmerised by the girl, in the other scene he's making you crack up with some clowning around, in the third he’s got you in the palm of his hand in an emotional scene.

This is Ranbir's show all the way and he carries the film with effortless grace. Katrina Kaif's energy adds to the film as she excels in the comedy and looks every bit the new-age Cinderella complete with a nasty step-mother. One wishes her role went beyond the damsel-in-distress routine.

Ajab Prem... is replete with fun references to Santoshi's past films especially Andaz Apna Apna – the Ello Ello song materialises in one scene, as does a don who roams around with an unloaded gun, a black mark on the cheek leads to confusion and so on.

Music by Pritam is interesting; cinematography, sound design, editing are all top notch.

Writer-director Rajkumar Santoshi defines versatility like few can. Look at his filmography – he's done Damini, Andaz Apna Apna and the perplexingly below-par Halla Bol.

Fans of Andaz Apna Apna, and there are plenty, are hugely excited about Santoshi’s return to comedy. It's difficult, however, comparing AAA with APKGK as both follow different schools of humour – Andaz... was all about ridiculous situations, mixed identities and witty lines while Ajab... involves goofier, physical comedy.

Madhur Bhandarkar is synonymous with thought-provoking, hard-hitting films. Right from Chandni Bar to Fashion, the expert storyteller has made movies that hold tremendous shock value. In turn, Madhur has cultivated a rich fan-base for his films.

With Jail, Madhur not only makes you visit a prison, but also makes you peep into the psyche of a prisoner. In the recent past, Sriram Raghavan's Ek Hasina Thi, 2004, (Saif Ali Khan and Urmila Matondkar) and Nazim Rizvi's Undertrial, 2007, ( Rajpal Yadav) narrated the travails and anguish of innocents who were falsely implicated in a case. Besides, Nagesh Kukunoor's Teen Deewarein, 2003, ( Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Nagesh Kukunoor] too narrated the story of three convicts. But Jail is different from the above-named films.

Besides watching a thought-provoking story on celluloid, one has also come to expect incredible performances in a Madhur Bhandarkar movie. And Jail too is embellished with superb performances from its key actors.

Jail transports you to a hitherto unknown world that most of us haven't seen and if this is its USP, it's also something that might go against it. Irrespective of how strong its merits are, a section of moviegoers (read families/kids), who generally tilt towards feel-good/sunshine/entertainment-filled cinema, might skip this film due to its dry (and at times depressing) themes.

In a nutshell, Jail mirrors reality in true Madhur Bhandarkar style. It's hard-hitting, it's compelling, it's thought-provoking. The efficient storyteller has the courage to speak a new language in every film and for that very reason, Jail should be on your agenda.

Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is living a dream life - a great job and a loving girlfriend (Mugdha Godse). However, things take an ugly turn when, after a series of unfortunate events, he suddenly wakes up in jail. Parag is perplexed. The only salvation he finds is in Nawab (Manoj Bajpayee), a convict, who believes that Parag is innocent.

Soon, Parag is left with a choice, to either live a life with hordes of broken hearts and shattered souls amidst the prison walls or hope to see freedom some day.

Jail involves you from the very start. The inmates, their crimes, their individual stories, you get drawn into a world that's very real. So real that you feel it's happening right in front of your eyes.

Madhur has a knack of narrating stories and he narrates the story of Parag Dixit with razor-edge sharpness. Besides, Jail also enlightens you of the legal process, which also acts as an eye-opener.

At the same time, the legal procedures and also the behavioural pattern of the inmates tend to get repetitive after a point and that's when you start feeling restless. Nonetheless, the post-interval has some interesting twists-n-turns. Neil getting thrown in a dark cell, spending the next few days in solitary confinement; a convict using the garbage van as the means to escape; another convict realising that his wife is now a cop's mistress. Also, the climax is touching and moves you.

Madhur hits the right note yet again. Madhur, Manoj Tyagi and Anuradha Tiwari's script involves you in most parts. Raghuvir Shekhawat's dialogues are true to life. There's no scope for music in a film like Jail, but the three songs are smartly integrated in the storyline. Kalpesh Bhandarkar's cinematography is top notch. Special mention must be made of Nitin Chandrakant Desai's prison set, where the film is entirely shot.

Not only does Neil Nitin Mukesh deliver his finest performance to date, but the performance would easily rank amongst the finest this year. He conveys the pathos and helplessness that this character demands with amazing understanding. He deserves all praise for his extraordinary portrayal.

Manoj Bajpayee pitches in a memorable performance. In fact, the supremely talented actor is in form after a long, long time. He's subdued all through, which only goes to prove that he knows the craft so well. Mugdha Godse underplays her part beautifully. Also, she carries the non-glam look well.

Aarya Babbar is fantastic. This film should make people sit and notice this young actor. Chetan Pandit is first-rate. Rahul Singh is excellent, especially in the sequence when he confronts his wife. The actor who plays the part of Joe D'Souza is effective.

On the whole, Jail is a well-made film from an expert storyteller. At the box-office, the film will appeal to those with an appetite for hard-hitting, realistic fares, but its clash with jab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani will affect its business to an extent.

Verdict: Three stars

Prabhash Joshi | Noted journalist Prabhash Joshi dies

New Delhi, Nov 6 (PTI) Noted journalist Prabhash Joshi has died of a heart attack here. He was 72.

He was admitted to a private hospital after he complained of chest pain at 11.30 pm where doctors declared him dead last night, family sources said.

He is survived by wife Usha Joshi, two sons Sandeep and Sopan, daughter Sonal and mother Leela Bai.

Joshi, who began his career with Nayi Duniya, was the founder editor of leading Hindi daily "Jansatta" in 1983.

After retiring from the newspaper in 1995, he continued as the chief editorial advisor.

Originally from Indore, Joshi, a veteran writer and a Gandhian, changed the definition of Hindi journalism with the publication of 'Jansatta'.

Joshi also worked with the Indian Express as the resident editor at Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Ahead of the release of his new film 3 Idiots, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan Thursday drew a distinction between the term "idiots" and "stupid", saying that "idiots are very normal persons" who at some point prove themselves in an "unconventional way".

At an event in a city hotel to promote the first song of Rajkumar Hirani's 3 idiots, Aamir said, "Idiots are thought to be very normal persons but at some point of time they prove themselves to be someone with extra calibre. They are not stupid, rather they come to limelight in an unconventional way."

Actor R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi were also present at the screening of the song "Jab life ho out of control, all is well".

There are five songs in the film.

Mumbai: Even though being a microblogging or social networking website, Twitter is used as a source for news by Indians.

A survey by technology site www.pluGGd.in says about 16 per cent of Indian users regularly ‘tweet’ to get news updates.

While 11 per cent use it to stay in touch with their friends, 10 per cent use the website for research purpose, according to the survey.

Justice S C Dharmadhikari, in fact, observed that there was "an increasing tendency to file suits against films on the eve of their release.'' He said that such a move, as the film-makers' lawyer pointed out, amounts to "nothing but blackmail.'' In this case, the judge said there was no need to delve into the issue of whether it was a case of blackmail, but warned that the time had come to take strict action against such claims.

He said that if doubts were raised about the bona fides of such pleas, proceedings would have to be initiated against such claimants for making "false statements on oath.''

One Sushila Sharma claiming to be the proprietor of Harsh Raj The Economic Timess had dragged director Madhur Bhandarkar, co-producer of Percept Ltd and writer Manoj Tyagi to court `alleging' infringement of copyright in her film `Jail,' which was never produced.

According to Bhandarkar's lawyers, Virag Tulzapurkar and Ameet Naik, Sharma's claim was not only frivolous but also malicious and filed on the eve of the film's release, smacked of blackmail. Tulzapurkar said Sharma neither concluded a contract, nor did she give a title to the film and the agreement was signed by Rajesh Maria as proprietor of Harsh Raj The Economic Timess. Advocate Venkatesh Dhond said that the screenplay for Bhandarkar's film was an original work authored by Tyagi along with one Anuradha Tiwari. Advocate Vineet Naik said that the film's publicity had started in September and yet the film was challenged just a few weeks before its release.

Shilpa shetty to announce her wedding date

It's chat mangni and pat biyaah for Shilpa Shetty. The sizzling diva has finally set her wedding date and is all set to officially announce it on Bigg Boss 3.

The leggy lass who recently got engaged to Raj Kundra is expected to tie the knot on November 22. What remains to be seen is whether little sis Shamita will be allowed to sneak out of the Bigg Boss house to attend the wedding.

The wedding ceremony will take place at her close friend Kiran Bawa's farmhouse at Khandala. It will be a quiet and private affair. The mehendi and sangeet will happen in Khandala too.

There will be a reception in Mumbai on November 24. Apart from Shilpa and Raj's families there will be Shilpa's father's businessmen guests, Raj's business friends and her friends from Bollywood. Raj might have a reception in London later.

Shilpa will be wearing a burgundy red brocade saree with Swarovski crystals which is being designed by Tarun Tahiliani.

When 5000 people chased Katrina Kaif

When Katrina Kaif was in Ahemdabad recently, she not only got mobbed but also got chased by bikers. Says a source close to Katrina, "It happened during the promotion of her forthcoming film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani at a mall in the city. A 5000-strong crowd turned up. Soon it became chaotic with fans screaming her name and threatening to break the security cordon. In the ensuing melee, Katrina, trying to escape the enthusiastic crowd, even hurt her leg as it got stamped upon by people on stage.

A gang of her fans followed her car on bikes, right up to the hotel she was staying at, and refused to leave until the actress met them. Adds the source, "The moment she emerged from the venue, some guys jumped on their bikes and followed her car whistling, screaming and singing songs loudly till she reached the hotel. One fan even stood in front of her refusing to let her enter till she gave him an autographed picture."

Katrina complied with their wishes. "She signed their CDs, posed for pictures and spoke to them in a bid to calm them and send them packing. Katrina says she's used to fans following her in small towns on bikes and chasing her. "You have to wave and smile and they are fine. I was more terrified on seeing the huge gathering at the mall. It was pretty scary as they were all screaming our names. They were over-excited. I thought if I stayed on stage they wouldn't do anything but soon the stage started shaking and I felt it was going to collapse."

"It was the most terrifying moment of my life the stage crashing down in front of the fans and I getting swallowed by the crowd! The feeling of suffocation gets to you. Fortunately, there was one particular massively built security guard who rushed me out of the stage and back to the hotel so well that I was able to breathe a sigh of relief when I entered my hotel room. He didn't allow any persistent fans to enter the lobby, too."

Big Bird still has legs. But does 'Sesame Street,' the longest-running children's program that's celebrating its 40th anniversary, still have legs?

In honor of Sesame Street's 40th anniversary, Google is running a Big Bird Doodle on its homepage. The bird's cute orange-and-pink legs make up the "L" in Google.
Everyone's favorite 10-foot feathery friend is one of the many characters to come out of the show over its long history. Oscar the Grouch, Elmo, Snuffy, and the Count are a few more.
The children's television series actually debuted on November 10, 1969--so we're still a few days away from the actual birthday. When the show premiered it was ground-breaking.
As Tipping Point author Malcolm Gladwell has stated, "Sesame Street was built around a single, breakthrough insight: that if you can hold the attention of children, you can educate them." Sesame Street was the first children's show that structured each episode and made "small but critical adjustments" to each segment to capture children's attention long enough to teach them something. Each segment is like a commercial.
The Children's Television Workshop produced the show, and the producers and writers built the program around the brownstones of an inner-city street, a choice that was "unprecedented" at the time, author Michael Davis wrote in his 2008 book Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street. Their intent was to attract inner-city viewers with a realistic city street, complete with peeling paint, alleys, and front stoops.
The program was cast with both White and African-American actors, and later Hispanics and Asians, to reflect the diversity of this kind of neighborhood. And then Jim Henson's furry and lovable Muppets--from Oscar the Grouch to Big Bird--were thrown in the mix.
The formula worked. Children of the 70s grew up glued to the series. A fluffy Muppet taught many of us the alphabet and how to count. And the popularity has continued. In 2006, Sesame Street became the most widely viewed children's television show in the world with 20 international independent versions and broadcasts in over 120 countries. Today it is ranked the fifteenth most popular children's show on television in the United States.

Next Wednesday, Sesame Street introduces its 41st season with a brand-new opening sequence and a star-studded cast.
"We have Cameron Diaz in our premiere episode," says executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente, "and Adam Sandler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kobe Bryant, Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, and more--we have over 30 celebrities this season. And we also have First Lady Michelle Obama!" Mrs. Obama will appear in the first episode to talk about the importance and benefits of planting a garden and eating healthy.
The upcoming season certainly sounds celebrity-packed, but after 40 years and with many new programs fighting for kids' time, does Sesame Street still have legs? Does it still offer the best educational programming?
I threw out these questions to members of the SFGate Bay Area Moms Facebook page and to a San Francisco parents Yahoo Group:
"My 20-month-old LOVES Sesame Street," shares Richmond mom Krishelle Mercer-Hursh. "It's all I can get him to watch. I actually believe he learned his letters, shapes, and numbers from the show (with some help from me of course). Its been on for so many years and still continues to teach children with quality programing."
San Francisco mom Melissa Brassfield adds: "Sesame Street crosses generations and still continues to educate while entertaining both the young and the old."
San Francisco dad Michael Conte doesn't agree. He's disappointed in how Sesame Street has evolved, and thinks it's now "The Elmo Show" with a bunch of supporting characters.

Elmo: Is he taking over the show?
"Elmo has the most irritating voice since old-school Barney, but more importantly, he's got no appeal to adults," says Conte, who suggests checking out The Poop blogger Peter Hartlaub's entries that recall the old Sesame Street.
Part of it is also songwriting," Conte adds. "I haven't heard anything lately that can rival 'Sing A Song,' 'I'd Like To Visit The Moon,' or anything by that crazy guy who I now know was Joe Raposo." (Raposo was one of the show's early songwriters and wrote the theme song.)
Nowadays, Conte says that he's more likely to turn to Backyardigans, Wonder Pets, and the occasional WordWorld when he sits down to watch TV with his kids. "I've even found myself watching Wonder Pets on my own after the kids have gone to bed," he says.
"Occasionally we'll pull up old-school Sesame Street on YouTube," Conte says. "The shows back then worked on so many levels, like Pixar movies. Each character had a distinct personality, and one character didn't monopolized the screen."

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who plays a 12-year-old progeria patient in 'Paa', says he had to stick on several pieces of specially crafted clay to get the right look for the movie. The actor couldn't wait to upload the first poster of the film on his blog bigb.bigadda.com Wednesday, and wrote at length about what went behind his look of a child suffering from progeria, a rare disease that causes premature ageing among children. 'The face that you see is the result of deep research. Kids affected by this problem lose all their hair, become bald and their veins begin to show prominently on their heads, which enlarge to a size beyond normal. Their teeth and eyes suffer also...,' posted Amitabh. To get the special look for the character, director R. Balki roped in international make-up artist Stephan Dupuis, who did Robin Williams' make-up in 'Mrs. Doubtfire'. 'The prosthetic process is arduous...Around eight pieces specially designed through laborious clay models are most meticulously stuck on to the face. Once the make-up starts, it is impossible to move even a few centimetres. Eating and drinking has to be avoided and you cannot talk because it displaces the pieces over the contours of the face. Separate pieces form the entire look,' the actor posted. The 67-year-old went on to add how the head and ears were one unit and came on as a helmet with the ears being add ons. He says his hearing used to be impaired when the make-up was applied as silicone covered his own ears. 'Two small holes are bored into the skull so some sound can go through. Also when you speak it reverberates inside the skull and you constantly feel you are inside a tunnel with pronounced echo,' he said. 'Eye lids come on close to the eyes, the forehead is another piece, the nose, the two cheeks, the upper and lower lip, the chin and finally the neck all get stuck on and then blended through an intricate electronic spray which merges all the pieces to look like one cohesive mass,' added Amitabh. The actor says that since they wanted the look to be authentic, he also had to shave off all hair on his hands, arms, chest and legs regularly so they could highlight the veins by colouring them. 'Paa' is being produced under Amitabh's banner AB Corp and also stars his son Abhishek. In a role reversal of sorts, Abhishek plays Amitabh's father in the film.

Whom did Shahid take for the first ride?

It’s natural for anyone to hazard a guess that when a 28-year-old successful bachelor buys a cool new ride there’s a good chance the first ride will be shared by a pretty girl. After all, who wouldn’t want to show off a set of brand new wheels in front of the ladies? So it was a pleasant surprise to find out that the first person Shahid Kapoor took for a ride in his latest SUV turned out to be none other than dad Pankaj Kapur! About 45 minutes post driving out of the showroom, Shahid was spotted at Andheri driving his car with his father sitting beside him. It seems that Shahid had timed receiving the keys perfectly, so that he could directly go to the airport straight from the showroom and receive his father. Eat your heart out ladies... there is a line to get into that car. The good news is, that no girl has set foot in it just yet!

While things are proceeding smoothly in Mugdha Godse's professional life with Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail up for release, the same can't be said about her personal life. The latest couple to split is Mugdha and her longtime boyfriend, Mithun Purandare, who is a model and aspiring actor.

Mugdha and Mithun first met in 2003 during the shoot of a music video, which was being directed by ace photographer Jagdish Mali. Cupid struck when the two got several modelling assignments together. Mithun was completely smitten by Mugdha. He was on cloud nine when Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, which marked Mugdha's entry in Bollywood, hit the theatres last year. Buzz was, he had even booked an entire theatre so that he could organise a private screening of Fashion for Mugdha's family, relatives and close friends.

Destiny had other plans for the couple by the time Bhandarkar went on the floors with another Mugdha starrer, Jail. Things started going wrong early this year when the couple realised that they had completely different tastes. However, they soon buried the hatchet and decided to give their relationship another shot. “By then, too much water had flown under the bridge. They just couldn’t work things out,” said a source.

The parting was, however, not ugly. “Mugdha and Mithun are still friends and wish well for each other,” added our source.

When asked about her break-up, Mugdha was initially a little hesitant and said, “Things are different now.” On being probed further, she confirmed and said, “Mithun and I are not together any longer. I am single now. Both, Mithun and I, were very young then (when their relationship started). As two people grow up, they might realise that they are not meant to be together as a couple but are better off as friends.”

Though rumours of a break-up have been brewing for a while, it’s now clear that Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have ended their relationship. Though various theories have been floating about the cause of their break-up, here’s the real reason why the two have parted ways.

Immediate speculation will point to Ranbir’s chemistry with Katrina Kaif. It’s hasty to pin the blame on Katrina though, as Deepika had seemed insecure before the pretty actress came into the picture. And it’s not Ma Kapoor that put the spanner in the works either.

Ranbir, after all, is a hot-blooded Kapoor. He is a natural charmer as far as women go and sooner or later, Deepika would have heard about his flirtations. Apparently, Ranbir isn’t too modest about it either. Discretion about his less-than-innocent encounters would’ve been highly advisable, but he hasn’t exactly been a poster-boy for it so far. Common friends carried the news to Deepika, perhaps adding a bit of tadka for flavour.

This is when Deepika decided to call it off. Apparently, she told Ranbir to mend his ways since she had given a lot to this relationship. She had cut off ties with all her ‘good friends’ like Nihar Pandya and Yuvraaj Singh. So, she wanted Ranbir to give 100 per cent to the relationship as well. She kept hearing about his ‘friendship’ with Nandita Mahtani and other girls.

At this point of time, Ranbir started feeling suffocated in his relationship with Deepika. He asked for his space and Deepika justifiably wanted to know ‘What space? Aren’t we a couple?’

The final straw was hearing about his ‘crackling chemistry’ with Katrina. The next thing she did was to land up on the sets of Rajneeti in Bhopal, where Ranbir was shooting with Katrina. She stayed there for nearly two weeks.

After she came back from Bhopal, her relationship with Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s son was almost over. The crack first became evident at Shabina Khan’s birthday party two weeks ago where the two sat in different corners of the room.

And what about Neetu Singh? Mamma Neetu, who is said to have a very cold relationship with Deepika, did not play catalyst. A source says, “Neetu wants Ranbir to be happy. She will never go against his choice. Ranbir always treated Deepika as a girlfriend and not as someone special, basically there was no passion in their relationship.”

What is it with Katrina Kaif that the other starlets of bollywod.lack? Kats is a well known star with a not so perfect Hindi. In spite of having worked in more than a dozen movies she still has to perfect the language. But in spite of this Kats is a favorite amongst the young and the old alike.

After having been a success with the recent hit movie ‘New York’, opposite John Abhram and Niel Nitin Mukesh she struck the right chord with the young audience. Every young aspirant wanted to be like her.
The fact that she has a certain amount of innocence along with a lot of sensuousness woks for her very well. Kats can be very bold and forthright as she usually is in her daily life and at the same time she can be very convincing as a coy leading lady ready to surrender to her chosen man as and when she chooses to do so.
Now once again she is ready to show her talent with the ever cute, young star Ranbir Kapoor. The couple makes a cute twosome. The movie releasing is’ Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’.

Going by the promos of the film it seems to be one with exotic locations and loads of fun. Katrina has a new hair style and is looking much younger and fresher here. The chemistry between the two seems to be good too. The best part of them together is the fact that they seem to sharing a great bond of friendship between them, which comes across whenever they make a public appearance together.

Well let’s hope all goes well for the movie and for all connected with it.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Movie Review | Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Review

Raj Kumar Santoshi has changed lanes. Known for intense, hard-hitting movies [with the sole exception of Andaz Apna Apna], Santoshi now attempts a rom-com in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, his new endeavour. That's something we all know by now, right? But not many of us know that Santoshi is equally at home handling a comedy. And Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani proves it.

If you're attempting a rom-com, you need to get a few things right... One, the romance should be livewire. Ditto for the chemistry between the on-screen pair. Two, the film should make you laugh. As simple as that!

In Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, the romantic moments are endearing. Most importantly, the on-screen chemistry is electrifying. Ranbir and Katrina look great together!

I've often said that comedy is serious business and the audience has moved over from banana peel humour in movies. The comedy in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - though it borders on absurdity - is funny in most parts. Sure, there're times when you feel that the humour looks forced [climax fight especially], but you don't grudge it since Santoshi's intentions are crystal clear from Scene 1 onwards: Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega.

Another factor that goes in its favour is Pritam's music, who belts out a couple of lilting tracks.

On the flip side, the film could've done with a fresh plotline. When you talk of 'Ghazab Kahani', it has to be ghazab by all means. It shouldn't fall prey to predictability, but the second hour succumbs to mediocrity occasionally.

Yet, despite the blemishes, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is a full-on entertainer. One thing is for sure, you'd fall in prem with Prem and his antics. An ideal date movie that should connect with the youth.

Prem's [Ranbir Kapoor] fundas in life were very simple - be happy, make others happy. A case of mistaken identity leads Prem to almost kidnap Jenny [Katrina Kaif], who was brought up by indifferent and uncaring foster parents. Prem falls in love with Jenny, but realizes gradually that Jenny is in love with someone else [Upen Patel], the son of a conniving politician [Govind Namdeo]. Prem decides to sacrifice his love and get the lovers married.

In the first sequence, Santoshi makes it loud and clear that Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is very unlike his previous ventures; this one harbours on illogical situations. Right from the time Ranbir sets his eyes on Katrina [the yellow outfit episode], the film is a roller coaster ride.

A few sequences entertain you thoroughly. Sample these: Katrina slaps Ranbir when he stammers as well. She feels he's imitating her; Ranbir's sequence in the church; Salman Khan's cameo; the love-hate relationship that Ranbir and his father [Darshan Jariwala] share; the sequence at the party; the interval point when Ranbir falls on the ground literally... the first hour of the film simply rocks!

But the second hour makes you a little grumpy. The third angle of the triangle [Upen Patel] isn't convincing, while his father's [Govind Namdeo] track is beaten to death. Even the villain [Zakir Hussain] is a sore point.

Watching the second hour makes you feel that the film may've had a longer running time and in order to bring down the length, a number of scenes must've been chopped off, which, in turn, must've resulted in continuity lapses. For instance, Katrina's kidnap by the villains looks too sudden. When and how did it occur?

Yet, there're two sequences in this hour which are remarkable and which should bring the house down. One, when Ranbir wears Katrina's top to hide her presence in the house and the climax fight, when Katrina mistakenly bangs Ranbir a couple of times.

Directorially, Santoshi proves the naysayers wrong and bounces back with a film that the youth would relate to. You can't write off the maker and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani proves it. Pritam's music has 'Hit' written all over it. S. Thiru's cinematography is first-rate.

Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani proves it yet again. He's charismatic, emotes exceptionally well and tickles your funny bone without making faces. It's a fantastic performance all the way. Katrina Kaif continues to surprise. She surprised you in NEW YORK. She surprises you again in this film. She scores in both emotional and light scenes. Also, Ranbir and Katrina make a wonderful on-screen couple.

Darshan Jariwala is exceptional. Smita Jaykar is very good. Upen Patel is decent. Govind Namdeo is getting typecast. Zakir Hussain is fair. Navneet Nishan is alright.

On the whole, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani entertains majorly. Jamiat upholds fatwa against Vande Mataram

NEW DELHI: In a move likely to spark a political controversy, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Tuesday endorsed a fatwa issued by the influential Darul
Uloom seminary at Deoband that calls on Muslims not to sing Vande Mataram as doing so was violative of Islam's faith in monotheism.

The resolution said Muslims were being targeted over the issue and asserted, "We love our country, but cannot elevate it to the status of Allah, the only one worshipped by Muslims... The fatwa of Darul Uloom is correct." The reference to nation as mother and an ode to motherland was unIslamic and "should not be deliberately raised for causing communal discord and law and order," the Jamiat said.

The endorsement from a Jamiat "general session" at Deoband came on a day when the assembly was addressed by home minister P Chidambaram and saw BJP swiftly wading in, claiming the minister's presence had "legitimised" the "anti-Vande Mataram" view. "We oppose the Jamiat's resolution," said BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

The Jamiat move comes in the backdrop of some states like BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh introducing singing of Vande Mataram in government-run schools. Endorsing Darul Uloom's "edict", the resolution said, "We love our country and have proved it many times, but Vande Mataram violates our faith in monotheism that is the foundation of our faith."

BJP vice-president Mukhtar Naqvi said singing Vande Mataram was not compulsory but the manner in which the Jamiat opposed the verses immortalised in Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's classic was unacceptable. He also targeted Chidambaram for addressing a gathering where the singing of Vande Mataram was opposed saying this would be read as support for the Jamiat's "retrograde" viewpoint.

Former Union minister Arif Mohammad Khan wondered about the "provocation" for Deoband's fatwa, stressing that the objectionable stanzas in the classic, which had idolatrous references to Bharat Mata, do not form part of the national song.

BSP's Shahid Siddiqi, however, defended the religious seminary. On the issue of timing, he suggested that it was prompted by a campaign in western UP demanding that Deoband issue a fatwa recommending the national song to Muslims.

In his address, Chidambaram steered well clear of any controversy, praising the Jamiat for its anti-terrorism resolution adopted at Deoband last year. He said it was a call for all citizens, not just Muslims, to oppose violence and terrorism. He also criticised the demolition of Babri Masjid and said it was the duty of the majority to look after the minorities.

In other resolutions the Jamiat adopted, it opposed the proposed Central Madrasa Board as an intrusion in the running of madrasas while also saying that education of girls after 10 years of age should be in accordance to "complete Sharia norms."

While what Sharia norms would mean is not spelt out by the resolution, it is understood to refer to segregated classrooms and use of veil and hijab. Darul Uloom has repeatedly ruled co-education as unlawful and also did not support a recent ruling of a senior cleric at Cairo's highly respected Al Azhar that face veils were not required in all-women classrooms.

Declaring Islam as a religion of peace, the Jamiat said it was opposed to killing of innocents as "unpardonable sin." It said the effort to make jihad synonymous with terrorism as incorrect. "Jihad is basically a constructive phenomenon... misrepresentation of jihad should be avoided. We condemn suicide bombings and murderous attacks targeted at innocent persons, women, children and elderly," the resolution said.

Among the 25 resolutions that were adopted, the Jamiat opposed women's reservation bill but plugged for quotas for Muslims including marking out separate sub-quotas for Muslim OBCs and treating "labour castes" and "backward classes" among Muslims at par with Dalits by amending Article 341 of the Constitution. The scheduled caste category should be extended to sections like Muslim weavers.

The resolutions slammed the government for not acting fast enough on Sachar Committee recommendations and the Ranganath Mishra report on alleged discrimination in government selection processes. Another resolution asked the government to bring forward the promised law on communal violence.

The Jamiat strongly opposed the Delhi High Court ruling legitimising gay sex which it said would lead to "sexual anarchy and recognition of debauchery."

The Jamiat declared homosexuality as "unnatural, accursed and deviant behaviour that would irreparably damage social fabric as two people of the same sex were in no way able to contribute to procreation of the human race".

As in Deobandi writings, the Jamiat warned against other sects like Qadyani for being "turncoats", suggesting its own version of Islam was the true and correct one. Calling for professional technical institutions, it said it was necessary for Muslim organisations to take the lead as Muslims who studied professional courses could get cut off from their moorings. It condemned US intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bollywood's latest blue-eyed boy - Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor is raking in Rs 5 crore for each film.

In just three years, Ranbir Kapoor has achieved something that took Shah Rukh Khan eight years.

He is raking in Rs 5 crore a film, compared with Rs 3 crore last year when his second film, Baachna Ae Haseeno, was released. The man, who made a disastrous debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, hasn’t looked back after his second film did decent business. And Wake Up Sid, produced by Karan Johar, has seen renowned filmmakers noting the latest Kapoor sensation’s box office appeal.

Predictably, producers are running out of adjectives to praise him. Apoorva Mehta, CEO, Dharma Productions, the producer of Wake Up Sid, says Ranbir’s performance has made the film a success. “He has all the qualities an average Indian seeks — an obedient son, talented actor, great looks. He is vivacious and that connects him with today’s youth.”

His brand endorsement value has also zoomed. Kapoor is now getting Rs 3 crore for each endorsement, from roughly half that amount two years earlier, when he signed up for Pepsi.

“He has a universal appeal which works well for any brand. Ranbir is God’s gift to advertisers but he has to sustain himself,” believes ad guru Prahlad Kakkar.

With big-ticket flicks like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani opposite Katrina Kaif and Yash Chopra’s Rocket Singh, Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti and Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka Chopra, Kapoor is miles ahead of other actors in his age group — Imran Khan, Neil Mukesh and Harman Baweja.

“Ranbir is a youth icon and has a bright future. He has the privilege of working with the best in the industry — be it filmmakers or stars,” says film analyst Komal Nahata.

“Imran needs a hit to bring him back in the race, while Neil has played intense characters so far, which has only a niche appeal,” says Sonu Lakhwani, Vice President, Percept Talent Management.

Industry sources say Imran, Kapoor’s closest competitor, charges around Rs 3 crore a film, while Neil earns close to Rs 1.5 crore after the success of New York.

While stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar are in a different and higher league, demanding revenue share, etc, Kapoor still has the biggest advantage over them — age is on
his side.

Recent PR survey rates Ranbir kapoor over Shah Rukh Khan

While most of his colleagues believe that Shah Rukh Khan has the most efficient PR machine for himself, Ranbir Kapoor has pipped SRK to the post in terms of PR strategy and popularity.

In a survey conducted by Eikona, the Specialised Content and PR Measurement Evaluation Unit division of TAM (Television Audience Measurement) across four cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore, Ranbir Kapoor gets the most number of votes 39 points out of 40 as the top actor who has garnered maximum publicity because of the publicity campaign generated for Wake Up Sid.

Sanjay Dutt is a close second at (37). But here's the shocker. Shah Rukh is at the bottom of the list (on number 10) in terms of PR and media coverage managing only 4 points out of 40. Even the media-shy Salman Khan beats SRK with a score of 21 while Aamir tops Salman with 25. Hrithik Roshan comes third with a score of 32.

Ranbir is modest about his popularity, "I really don't know if I should be thankful or apologetic about it. I guess it's also because of the multiplex strike that three films of mine are releasing back to back. But I will make a conscious effort next time to space my releases."

According to Karan Johar, it's Ranbir's almost iconic fan following amongst the youth that has got him his popularity. "If Ranbir tops the list it's because of his publicity done for Wake Up Sid for which I would like to thank his efficient publicist. I would also thank Ranbir for being so supportive about our PR strategy. Both Ranbir, my publicist, publicity designer Divya and Ayaan (Mukherjee) have all worked to promote and project Ranbir and Wake Up Sid the correct manner. After having dinner with Mallika Sherawat and Kites co-producer Brett Ratner at the famous Mr.Chow in Beverly Hills, Hrithik Roshan got a lot of attention from the local paparazzi after he left the hotel.

On asked by the paparazzi, Hrithik said he recently shot a movie with Barbara Mori. Along the way, the video guy informed Hrithik about a place called Millions of Milkshakes where celebrities make milkshakes based on their name.

Hrithik said he would love to have a milkshake after his name, but said he was leaving for back home soon, but the next time he would be back in a few weeks and would visit the place.

Pirated Windows 7 generates $100K in India

LUCKNOW: About 50,000 pirated DVDs of Microsoft Windows 7 are estimated to have been sold here since the official launch on Oct 22, generating unaccounted business of around Rs 50 lakh (nearly $100,000).

The reason for the allure of the pirated versions: These cost Rs 40-Rs 250 in Naza Market in Hazratganj here, drawing buyers from not only the rest of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand but also Nepal and Bangladesh.

"This is the biggest market in the region," said a shopkeeper in Hazratganj, claiming at least 50,000 DVDs of the pirated Windows 7 have been sold since hitting the local markets within 24 hours of the official launch, fetching sellers about Rs 50 lakh so far.

The legal version of the new operating system launched by Microsoft Corp costs between $150-$300 (Rs 7,500-Rs15,000) in the international markets. The company, however, tagged its prices 20 percent below international rates in India, where it is available in the Rs 6,000-Rs 11,000 range through official channels.

Despite the discounted company rates, buyers are opting for the pirated version. "Why invest Rs 10,000 when it is available for Rs 250?" asked Pramod Yadav, a student pursuing a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course.

Added Mohit Singh, who runs a computer hardware and software maintenance company: "We pay for only the DVD as we are regular customers. A DVD hardly costs Rs 20-40."

Most computer service providers or "regular customers" in Lucknow and elsewhere in India use pirated software, contended Nishant Kumar, a software engineer with HCL Technologies in Greater Noida.

According to him, what makes the pirated operating systems more attractive is that cheap pirated anti-virus software is also freely available.

"A lot of anti-virus software, for example Awast, is available on the Internet," Kumar said, adding that it was equally effective and has the same service life.

Those selling pirated Windows 7 deny doing anything illegal.

"There are over 200 shops in Naza Market. All have everything you want. We are not doing anything illegal as everything is available on the Internet," said a shopkeeper not willing to be named.

"We are only transferring and supplying to buyers who include students, professionals and even big business houses." Those selling authentic software are unhappy.

"Be it software or encyclopaedia, everything is available in pirated form within 24 hours. We do not get the expected business," Amit Mishra of Newgen Technologies, the authorised distributor of Compaq, HP, Microsoft and Lenovo in Hazratganj, told IANS.

The police express helplessness in combating piracy. "We know what is going on for the past couple of decades. But we cannot act on our own. We need a formal complaint to act or else you (the media) will come down on us," police spokesperson AK Pathak told IANS.

Besides software, the Naza Market and the Naka Market in the Naka area are also famous for producing CDs and DVDs of newly released Bollywood movies within 24 hours.

"You name the movie and you will have the CD, DVD the next day," boasted Harnam Singh, a Naka shopowner.

Internet search giant Google has emerged as the most sought after company for business and engineering graduates, according to two surveys, which term the company as the world's 'most attractive employer'.

According to the surveys compiled by Universum, a global employer branding firm, Google has been ranked number 1 in the list of top 50 global businesses and engineering companies.

The surveys said, "Google's number one position is no surprise. Due to its remarkable brand image, students worldwide see it as a company they would like to work for."

The global rankings -- based on a survey of 120,000 students -- highlights the world's most powerful employer brands and those companies that are 'the most successful in talent attraction and retention'.

Students from the United States, Japan, China, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Spain, Canada and India's top academic institutions took part in the survey.

Soft drink major Coca-Cola is in the 13th position, while Citigroup has cornered the 21st place for itself among the list for business students.

Oracle and Philip Morris make it to the top 50 for business students, but not for engineering students.

GlaxoSmithKline and Alcatel-Lucent appear in the engineering ranking, yet not in the business ranking.

Despite it being one of the toughest years for car manufactures, BMW and Daimler appear in the global top 50

Smartphones Getting Less Expensive

Within 5 years, 45% of smartphones will hit the market for less than $200 with a new contract, according to data from ABI Research.

It may soon be easier for consumers and businesses to buy smartphones, according to a study from ABI Research that said the retail cost will continue to go down.

The report, "Smartphone and OS Markets," said only 18% of smartphones in 2007 were commercially available for under $200, but this year that number has grown to 27%. The report also estimated 45% of smartphones will be priced below $200 by 2014.

The original Apple iPhone was a hit with reviewers, but its high initial price tag meant it was a relatively niche device. The iPhone 3G became a massive sales hit partly because its $199 entry price-point was more affordable to a wider audience. ABI also said the iPhone spurred overall interest in other smartphones because it raised awareness about what these devices were capable of.

"Nearly all consumers used to choose handsets based on the physical characteristics of the hardware, not the software inside," said Kevin Burden, ABI's mobile devices practice director, in a statement. "The iPhone changed that: more users are now shopping for their handsets based on the operating system and software, which is something once thought to be very unlikely."

The downward pricing pressure is also a competitive response to the iPhone, as marquee handsets like the Motorola Droid, BlackBerry Storm 2, and the HTC Hero will all be released for less than $200 with rebates and a new contract. While the report said there may never be a $30 smartphone, ABI expects the greatest increase in smartphone shipments over the next few years will be in the $100 to $200 range.

The wireless carriers will play a large role in the widespread adoption of smartphones, as the mobile operators' subsidy dollars are vital to get these devices to the $200 price point. With limited subsidy dollars to go around, the downward pricing pressure may make royalty-free operating systems like Android or the open source Symbian more attractive, and it may open the door for low-cost handset makers like INQ Mobile.

Jaipur fire: Indian Oil Corporation faces negligence charge

JAIPUR: An executive of a private company has filed a complaint against Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) after a fire broke out at its oil depot here October 29 killing 11 people and injuring over 150. With four of the 11 tanks in the depot still ablaze on the sixth day, the IOC has been charged with criminal negligence.

The blaze broke out in the depot in Sitapura industrial area about 20 km from the Jaipur city centre at 7.15 pm October 29.

"The FIR (first information report), was filed on Monday by Pratipal Singh, an employee of Genus Power Infrastructure Limited, a factory that is situated near the IOC depot," a police officer said on Tuesday.

"We have lodged a case under Section 304 A, which relates to causing death by negligence, and other appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code," he said.

According to the management at Genus, the factory has suffered massive damages because of the fire.

"There were three casualties in our factory and 15 others were injured. It is difficult for us to assess the damage to the industrial unit as of now. We would only be able to do it once the fire is controlled in the depot," an official of the factory said.

Meanwhile the district administration has decided to shut educational institutes in Sitapura for the next eight days. The decision was taken as some of the buildings at the institutes were damaged.

The district administration said that the fire is still blazing in four of the 11 tanks situated in the depot. These tanks contain petrol and diesel. In the remaining seven tanks the fire has almost come to an end and black smoke is coming out, which has formed dark clouds in a two to three km radius around the premises.

A union petroleum ministry team has already visited the site and started its probe into the fire. The team is to submit its report in 60 days.

IOC officials say it will take over a year to rebuild the depot which has been completely damaged.

People living in close proximity of the depot have been complaining of breathing difficulties and itching in the eyes.

"Since Friday night I have been having problems in breathing. I complained to my doctor and he told me it is because of the smoke in the air," Adesh Kumar, a resident of a nearby colony, said.

Tata Motors Ltd (TML) will showcase the much-awaited crossover vehicle Xover at the Indian Auto Expo in New Delhi this January. The
Tata X-Over vehicle, expected to be priced Rs 6-8 lakh, will hit the markets in the first half of the 2010 and plug a vital gap in its portfolio.

Positioned to take on Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and Chevrolet Tavera, the Xover with its three row of seats will attempt to blend the benefits of a family-friendly luxury tourer with the refined driving dynamics and visual cues of an activity-oriented sports utility vehicle.

This seven-seater vehicle will sport a new generation engine, navigation system, ABS and air bags among other enhancements.

Created with extensive design inputs from London-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC), the concept vehicle was first showcased at the 75th Geneva Motor Show
in 2005.

A decision to go ahead with the production was taken a couple of years later and the vehicle design fine-tuned . Vendors for supply of components were then tied up and prototypes readied for testing earlier this year. According to sources, extensive testing of the prototypes is currently underway in western India.

“Xover’s production variant will be ready for display at the Auto Expo in New Delhi,” said Nitin Seth, head of car product group, passenger car business unit at TML.

While the vehicle will closely resemble the concept that was displayed at Geneva, the radical headlamp cluster of the concept could go for a more conventional set.

Seth, however, ruled out a production version of Prima, the concept luxury sedan designed by Pininfarina and showcased by TML at the 79th Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

Muslim clerics support Vande Mataram fatwa, BJP calls it 'anti-national'

New Delhi/Lucknow: The Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind on Tuesday supported a decree against the national song 'Vande Mataram' on the grounds that some of its lines were 'against the religious principles of Islam'. The move drew fierce criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which termed the move 'anti-national'.

The resolution asking Muslims not to sing the national song was adopted at the national convention of the Jamiat, one of the largest groups of Muslim clerics in India, held at Darul Uloom Deoband, one the largest Muslim seminaries in South Asia, about 150 km from the national capital.

Home Minister P Chidambaram was present at the convention, which was also attended by some Hindu priests.

Muslim clerics had issued the fatwa, or decree, against the song in 2006. They contended that 'Vande Mataram' means 'Mother (India), I bow to thee!'.

Terming the decree against the singing of the national song as 'anti-national', the BJP said Islamic organisations should desist from issuing such fatwas that are against the nation's interest.

"We oppose the fatwa and will not tolerate such religious decrees at any cost. They are against our national values," BJP national general secretary Kalraj Mishra told reporters at a press conference in Lucknow.

"As such fatwas stand against national integrity, we all should stand united against them," he added.

The BJP also strongly criticised the Congress ministers for participating in such a convention where the fatwa against the national song was issued.

"Participation of Congress ministers like Home Minister P Chidambaram is unfortunate. It clearly reflects approach of the Congress party that it doesn't mind compromising with anti-national organisations just to appease the minority community," said the BJP's state unit president Ramapati Ram Tripathi.

"Interestingly, the Congress leaders are singing the national song since 1896 and had even organised a programme in 2006 on its 100th anniversary, but now it's truly shocking and surprising as they themselves are supporting anti-national organisations that are against Vande Matram," he added.

However, Muslim clerics were firm on their stand.

"Some of its lines are of course against the religious principles of Islam. We cannot bow before anybody other than the Allah. It is un-Islamic," Moulana Muizuddin of the Jamiat said.

"Islam teaches us to worship only one god, Allah. We are Indians and there are other ways to express our feelings for the nation rather than bowing before it. Loving your country doesn't only mean worshipping it," Muizuddin said.

"We love our mothers. Islam doesn't even permit bowing before mother. We love the Prophet but we cannot even bow before him."

Maulana Salman, who teaches at the Deoband seminary, said: "We are true Muslims and true Indians. There is no doubt about that. But we no longer remain Muslims when we offer our prayers to anybody else than the Allah. Patriotism is not only about singing songs. We are and will remain Indians without singing Vande Mataram."

Sensex moves above 15600; realty, IT gain

MUMBAI: Indian markets were witnessing buying activity at lower levels after a dismal performance in last session. The beaten down stocks and sectors were leading the pullback rally.

“Warren buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway bought remaining 77% shares and debt in a rail road company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. for $44 billion. This is as he puts an "all-in wager" on the U.S. economy. Though it is a long term positive signal, markets will focus more on a Federal Reserve statement on interest rates and the economy due to be released in US today.

Gold futures finished at a new all time high of $1084, as news of India buying 200 metric tons of bullion from IMF spread. Our markets are likely to bounce back and head back towards 4650. FII have gone short aggressively on index futures and that may lead to buying after higher opening,” said Anagram Stock Broking note.

At 10:50 am, Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex was at 15620.67, up 215.73 points or 1.40 per cent. The index hit a high of 15623.23 and low of 15487.97.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was at 4629.55, up 65.65 points or 1.44 per cent. The 50-share index hit a high of 4630.65 and low of 4565.

BSE Midcap Index was up 1.30 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index rose 0.40 per cent.

“Trend deciding level for the day is 4611 / 15564. If Nifty trades above this level during the first half-an-hour of trade then we may witness a further rally up to 4683 – 4802 / 15798 - 16191. However, if Nifty trades below 4611 / 15564 for the first half-an-hour of trade then it may correct up to 4492 – 4419 / 15171 – 14938,” the brokerage said.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index was up 3.87 per cent, BSE IT Index moved 2.66 per cent higher and BSE Oil&gas; Index advanced 1.99 per cent. BSE Power Index was down 0.47 per cent.

Jaiprakash Associates (4.71%), DLF (3.88%), Infosys Technologies (3.66%), ICICI Bank (3.40%) and Sterlite Industries (3.40%) were amongst the Sensex gainers.

Tata Power (-1.68%), Tata Steel (-0.36%), NTPC (-0.24%), BHEL (-0.16%) and Sun Pharmaceuticals (-0.07%) were amongst the losers.

Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1238 advances and 915 declines.

Asian markets were in the green after a fall and as investors’ awaited outcome of meeting of central banks. Nikkei was up 0.12 per cent, Hang Seng was up 1.63 per cent, Shanghai Composite moved up 0.78 per cent, Taiwan Weighted moved 1.85 per cent higher.

The US markets too rebounded and ended on a positive note. S&P; 500 closed up 0.24 per cent, Nasdaq gained 0.40 per cent and Dow Jones slipped 0.18 per cent.
